Integers are whole numbers and their opposites. They include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
Zero is neither positive nor negative. It is the origin point on our soccer pitch.
Left = Negative | Right = Positive
Think of the number line as a soccer pitch. Moving right is an offensive run (+), moving left is a retreat (-).
The further right you go, the greater the value. The further left, the smaller the value.
5 + 3 = 8
Adding positive integers is like making two consecutive forward runs. You move further right on the pitch.
Same signs? Add the numbers and keep the sign. You are moving in one direction.
(-5) + (-3) = -8
Adding negative integers is like making two consecutive retreats. You move further left on the pitch.
Adding two negatives makes the value more negative. Keep moving left.
a – b = a + (-b)
Subtracting is the same as adding the opposite. To subtract, flip your direction and move forward.
Subtracting a negative is like a double-negative flip: it becomes addition!
-(-5) = +5
Reversing a retreat (-5) turns it into a forward sprint (+5). This is the key to solving complex equations.
Two negatives in a row cancel out to become a positive. Stay sharp!
